A certain amount of leds can stimulate coral growth. Ebay sells growing panels that are made of leds for cheap. Other led companies are very expensive that specifically grow corals. Do your research and make sure you price match ;)

LEDS can be great for corals, but they can be very expensive. For now, i deal with my poopy PC lighting.

There are a few threads on here in the DIY section about building your own led lighting system. There are also some really good ones on reef central for specific builds on corals. It can be done pretty easily. Yes the initial cost is a bit more but they defiantly pay for themselves in the long run, especially if you live some where electricity is expensive..

I am actually in the process of upgrading to LED myself.

Consider LED to basically be metal halide.

If done correctly, they can be sufficient to match metal halide or even exceed the benefits of for corals.

They also posses the "shimmer" lines that I love so dearly from my MH.

The range of colors you can get from LED light is greater, and many think more pleasing to the eye.

Once I start getting some more practical experience I will let you know more.

A good link if you are a DIY'er: http://www.reefledlights.com/

The powerful LED lights work great for corals. They are initially expensive but will pay off in the long run by saving on power and bulbs.

overcooked...do you have LED? I am working on a couple different systems. There is way too much information out there, part of that is good however, it shows exactly how customizable they are, which is great, especially for reefing applications. Guess its just intimidating when you are just getting your feet wet.

I got some par38s from Nano Customs and getting good growth. If I had a chance to do it over I would just go with a fixture as the par38s has really focused beams which I don't like. It's best to see the LED light you would like to buy in person first before buying one. Some are loaded with royal blues bulbs which give off a really unnatural glow to corals.

The thing about LED's are that they are a new-ish technology on reef tanks. There are many systems out there to choose from. When choosing make sure you pick a system that will work with your coral of choice. Each LED system has different LED wattages. You can easily check to see if it will fit your coral type with a par meter. Call the manufacturer and see if they can provide par numbers and what depth the par test was performed.

Good luck.
