i bought 3 pieces of wood about 8 years ago the tag said from one of the lakes in africa, it is really heavy but soft pieces will come off if you scrape it. it is a dark brown with a reddish tint.it cost me about $90 but its really pi.... me off 8 years and it still turns my water. i do a 25% water change twice a week because of it .i have 2 550 power heads and a 350 bio wheel on a 55, still yellow what the heck!

Let me get this right... Eight years under water and it's still leaching?

Looks like it's time to make a center piece for the coffee table out of it and scounge up some new old wood. Field Trip

There is a product on the market that you paint on wood and it hardens the (cellulose?), it's made to treat wood rot that's hard to replace like a small spot in a floor. I don't know if that would seal drift wood or if it's fish proof, I'll see what I can find out.

any thing you could find out would help, i've went out and found some more wood just trying to get it to sink. there's a construction site that ripped up a bunch of tree's and i got a few roots, peeled the bark off and have them in a 220 gal pond i just got off my cousin. they have been there for about 3 weeks now.it took a lot to weigh them down at first but every day i take weight off. i have noticed that the wood is getting slime on it any suggestions?

Wow leaching for 8 years!Thats gotta be a record.Give in and set it up as a blackwater tank or use the wood in a reptile tank.
If your going to use found wood stick to stuff thats been underwater for a few years.

Yes: I suggest that you throw that wood away. Fresh wood is not suitable for aquarium use. :thumbsdow It will start to rot and you will enjoy it even less than your old wood.

Probably an algae of so sort. Did you put bleach in the water? If not, try an algaecide. Just remember to soak it it in clean water to remove the algaecide before using it in your fish tank.

Just checking the map, I don't see much in the way of lakes around you, but how about that big river running thru rockford, it looks like it gets pretty twisty in places. Maybe you could drag for some driftwood, even from shore.? Pack a lunch. Might even find some 'MONSTERS'.

Just a thought. :grinyes:

Found one of them...Basically the same... Water based, evironmentally friendly etc. http://www.right-tool.com/pcpetwoodhar.html and not badly priced

Wish I knew about this when plecos ate thru fiberglass on wood tanks.

thanks for all your help!! ive got more info from MFK than i have from my local pet store's. i know i don't know everything, but i think some people should not be selling fish.i go to these stores for advice and its always bad, unless you are in there little click, i had a guy sell me a couple passion chiclids but he told me they were firemouths. then they got real firemouths in a few days later and the store would not take the passions back, what the:character0087: ?
