If you guys will remember, I had an outbreak in one of my 75's last year (anchor worm) - I had to resort to CopperSafe.

After a few months, I put one of my Wels in there, and he immediately showed signs of major discomfort (No other fish showed this.) His skin started to appear "bruised" and he was breathing hard, and actually started swimming in loops - I removed him right away, and once he was in the other tank, he went back to normal.

I am convinced it's because I had used Coppersafe in the tank previously. That particular tank is currently empty, but am afraid to use it for any catfish now. What can I do? Is there a way to make it catfish safe again?

PS: I didn't put the catfish in there until months later, with 75% weekly water changes.

Run some carbon if you think it has copper residue.

Wait, you said the tank is empty. How much copper was in the tank? If you wash the tank out and rinse it well once it's full running carbon will remove and excess copper from the water.

Two standard treatments of Copper Safe - tank was running (without carbon) since that time, until I shut the tank down for the move, a few months ago - tank has been dry since that time.

So, if I start the tank up again with carbon, how long until the copper is "really" gone?

I forgot - also - that for the move, all the gravel was removed (in bags) - I assume I would have to put the same gravel back in the same tank, to get rid of any copper in the gravel, right ?

Would putting "a lot more" carbon in do a better job than the usual amount?

The more carbon the better, might want to start over with new substrate too while your at it. Once the tank is up and running the carbon should do the job in a few days at most. Also use somthing like Prime or Safe in the water.

thanks a lot - I was concerned because I've read posts about people never being able to put inverts in tanks that once had copper in it.
