Wondering if arapaima are legal in Florida because in Oddball's post of restricted and prohibited fish by state. Bony tongues were listed as restricted but silvers, blacks, and jardini arowanas are legal so maybe arapaima are too?

Sorry. The law is actually listing bony tongue to focus on pimas. (According to Florida Statute 2004a & b). The enhanced display on their site states "Osteoglossidae (exception 2)

(2) except for Osteoglossum."

This means that Arapaima are not allowed. A problem in the law, as written, is the fact that the verbage denotes that Heterotis, Pantodon, and Scleropages are also not allowed. It appears the Department didn't spend enough time in making this portion of their state laws more concise.

Guess you didn't read the law yet. You may be issued a permit, in FL, to maintain a restricted species. You're required to meet state/federal animal husbandry minimum housing requirements. Those housing facilities are to be initially inspected before permit is issued. The holding facility requires running inspections at annual and unannounced times. The licensee pays for all inspections. You must show proof of need (ie: scientific study (provide research prospectus), public display, Licensed breeding for sale to fish markets and or states allowing species restricted in FL in their state). There are no permits for the average hobbyist.

Why should he have to go elsewhere and play "google" when he is already on a discussion forum?......aside from the fact that the thread is old and the question was directed at someone who hasn't posted or been active in quite some time the requested information should also be included in the restricted list.

I agree we should always encourage conversation.
What about in texas ?
According to the Texas parks and recreation website Arapaima gigas is prohibited.

I’m surprised at how many species are on the list.
