I have 5 catfish in a 300 gallon pond. the largest is in the 34 in. range and the smallest is in the 26 in. range. 3 of them are leiarius pictus, one is a leiarius marmoartus, and the fifth is a leiarius marmoratus xtsn. I run a 50 gallon sand and gravel filter with a pump that does 700gph. I believe that slow and consistant flow cleans the water better than continous and consistant fast flowing water. the pond is outdoors in a temperate northern california climate in the winter the pond is covered with clear plastic sheeting and partially a hot tub cover. when it gets really frosty I put tarps over the top of everything. The water stays at 72f in the winter with just 400 watts of heaters, 2 200watt heats. In summer the pond can get a water temp of 86f and is only covered by a fine neetting that acts as a shade clothe. I perform a 50% water change every 1 or 2 weeks. In warmer months the fish are feed every other day, in late fall to late winter they are feed 2 times a week. food varies from month to month put consists of raw marine molluscs, earthworms, tilapia, and panganius catfish filtes, all served raw and cut into quarter sized pieces, except the worms. I also add fresh(from an orange) orange juice and powdered garlic occasionally to the food. I have had these fish for about 2 years now.
What should I improve apon in your opinion?
For me this works and my fish havent had a disease or infection even though they used to scratch themselves up,since then I removed the casue of the scratches (milk crates).
Iam still learning and am 1/4 of the way through my undergraduate studies( just got done with all of my general ed and will be at humboldt state for fall of 2012) for my major in freshwater fisheries biology with a emphasis in aquaculture and aquarium sciences. I would like to know peoples views of my setup.
