I need to remove my 4 inch Leopard Ctenopoma out of the 55g because the blood parrots are ganging up on him and stressing him out. My husband and I both really like him and would hate to have to rehome him, I do have a empty 20g and was wondering if he could go in that? I have tried doing some research but the info on ctenopoma is quite varied. Any help?

Your Ctenopoma should be fine in the twenty.

I wouldnt put one in a 20. I had my old pair in a 38 gal and they used the whole tank, and now that theyre in my 120 gallon they use the whole tank. Mine are full grown though...

Eh, is it a 20 long? I know they prefer longer tanks, it should be fine in one of those for quite a while, once it gets to full size put it back and it should do fine against the parents. Mine is w/ a gymno balzani, heckelli threadfins, a butterfly fish ( i prefer black wolf aro), an albino senegal and a regular senegal. All in a 30 ga growout. But none of the fish are over 3.5 inches as of now are your parrots larger?

Also do you have any plants in the tank? Ctens love plants, thick stuff where they can get into and hide. If you add enough of that it should be able to evade and hide from the parrots enough to not really be affected. Mine is actually kind of bully-ish. He comes in hot like hes gonna nip or ram and then slows down and looks like a leaf and drifts away. Pretty funny haha

The blood parrots are all different sizes, 3", 4", 6", 7". The tank was pretty well planted when he was in there with them and it did not seem to make much of a difference. He reaction to being picked on was to act like a leaf but that just seemed to make them go after him more. They started dragging him around the tank. I did put him in the 20g, even if it is not his permanent home I still feel like it was the right choice, something bad would have happened to him if he stayed with the bps. I will be on the lookout for a larger tank just for him. As of right now I gave the 20g some extra filtration and added some tall plants that cover part of the surface of the water. He seems to like it.

Oh yeah hell do fine in the 20 for a while, if you want another tank going Senegal bichirs make great tank mates for ctens. Mine are always together, but if you just want to add more ctens, maybe a mottled or micro, a 30 would be good for life. If you want to go w/ slightly larger tank mates go up to a 55 or at least 40 ga breeder. My buddy has kept Senegal's in his 40 for years w/o problems. 2 of them, the dimens are good, no signs of stunting. I wouldn't keep em in it for life though

Good move relocating the Ctenopoma to the twenty.
