Just got me a group of 5 lil ones (1-1.5") for $8 a pop. Is this a good price? How fast do they grow? Any chance of breding? I've tried keeping these few years back but with little success (sadly lost them all within a month)...

I have never bred these but from what I can tell this is what you need.
Well oxengenated water with minimal current, this means a well planted tank with plants that break up surface flow such as elodea. Tank size is 29G minimum per pair. Water quality needs to be high, 0 ammonia, 20ppm or less nitrates, don't know about nitrites.
Very soft water 2-4dH. Very stable temps, 79-83F. pH needs to be a little acid to neutral 6.5-7.0 pH. They also need to be conditioned with mixed live food such as guppies, fairy shrimp, earthworms, etc.
Breeding has been accomplished but is not common.
They grow fairly slowly, in a year your fish should be around 3+" long in two years they should be of breeding size, 4-5". The price of $8 each for fish 1-1.5" is a good one. Currently liveaquaria sells slightly larger ones for about $25 each.
Good luck!

i had one.
very cool fish.
mine ate pellets after a while.
i found mine quite hardy.
at my lfs they are 1 US dollar for 1 inchers.
but thats cause im in singapore.

i have never bred them but i have kept them alot.
They are very hardy lil fish, once they get to about 2 inches or so. when they are little they are much more prone to getting ill. well worth the work though. they are ambush hunters, and they will eat a wide variety of foods, including live and pellet. 8 bucks is good for around here, i got mine for about 10. at 1-2 inches. lots of personality, and well worth any efforts that have to be made.
