Thought I'd share a couple of pic's of my young Leopard pair.

They spawned for the 1st time last week but it was the day before I moved house:wall:

Now I'm waiting to have a chance with the 2nd spawn.

Any coments (good or bad) welcome.

Dex...

That is a great looking pair. too bad about having to loose the spawn over a move though.

I'm not sure how old they are. I got them around 6 months ago at around 2.5''. The male is now around 5'' and the female 4.5''.

real quick question... how do you sex a discus?

I've heard a lot of opinions on it but there seems to be no clear cut way.

I use the method of 1 lays eggs and the other doesn't lol. Eggs being layed could always mean 2 females though but if you see them spawn or have fertile eggs its a pair.
Just before or after spawning the vent is visable also which makes it a lot easier to tell.

A lot of people have a lot of ideas on how its done but there is really no clear cut easy way.

Most advise to start off with a group and alow them to pair off by them selfs. It is however possible that 2 females will pair also.

I personally would start with 6 young and grow them out removing any I was not happy with and hope for at least 1 nice pair once mature. Although I wouldn't class them as a pair untill I either witnessed them spawn or had a fertile spawn from them.

Saying all that discus really aint massivly my thing and there are people no here no doubt a lot more clued up than I am.

Nice pair of Discus, Dex-evo. I'm going to guess your fish are around 10 months old, give or take a month possibly.

I think it's possible that your male might not be fertile yet, because I think the females simply mature faster (this makes sense if they are living in the wild - more mature males that have actually survived longer might pass on survival traits). Some of the domesticated strains can mature faster.

Good luck on your pair and I hope to see pics of their fry in the future!

Red Leopard are the best looking Discus IMHO. Maybe because I don't have any of those..hmm...the grass is always greener..etc..etc
