i came home this afternoon to find one of my roseline sharks, and albino rainbow shark floating in my tank. i also noticed my puffer had changed color, instead of green black and yellow, he was pretty much all brown. i changed 50% of my water and my puffer freaked out and started biting some of my plants in there, and then fell over stiff, i dug him out thinking he died but i saw he was still breathing. i rushed him to my 10 gallon tank and he puffed up, i thought he was going to explode. he then layed on his back and stayed like that for a good 3-4 mins. i thought i lost him again but saw him breathing. WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im going to petsmart now to get my water tested, any help will be greatly appriciated!!!!!!!!!!!

First off which puffer exactly do you have? is it the one in the photo below?

If that is what you have, then its going to need high-end brackish to full marine water parameters for it to thrive and survive long term...

Next up, i really don't know if you should trust petsmart to test your water, since from what i've read here, most employees there have no clue what they are on about... so going out and buying yourself a proper "API Liquid Test Kit" is essential so you can check parameters yourself and know its accurate...

As for the puffing, did you just remove the fish straight out the tank with a net and not in a container with water? if so, that could be detrimental to your puffer, since if he took in air while he was out of the tank, he may not be able to expel it and could cause problems with health and require you to burp your fish...

Anyway, best of luck with it all, and if you have the test results for your tank post them up as it could be useful, i.e. NitrIte, NitrAte, and ammonia levels... also what size tank was he originally in and was it cycled properly, i,e. how long has it been up and running?

he was in a 55 gallon, cycled for 2 months. his tank mates are 1 roseline shark, blue lobster, peacock eel and ghost knife. what i did was, took him out of the original 55 gallon, i have a hang on tank kind of jail cell if you wanna call it that and put him in there with water from the original tank and from the 10 gallon, aclimating him into it, i then put him in a in tank jell cell if you wanna call it that where the water goes in and out of the cell. i fully put him in the tank now and doesnt seem to be doing any better.

If that many of your fish are dying, there is a problem. Please post your ammonia, nitrite, & nitrate. Alk really isn't a big concern in there right now. Now he's in an uncycled 10g?

How was the tank cycled? What is your water change schedule?

Ghost kife will eventually need a 90g.

just got back from petsmart and they said everything is goo but my alkalinity is low, what now!!!!!!!

what does everything is good mean?

my nitrates, nitrites, ammonia were all good, he was in a cycled 10 gallon that i had 1 orange crayfish in. i changed the water every monday, doing 25-30%. as far as the ghost knife, i plan on getting a 125 gallon for him and other fish. sadly this morning i found him dead, but my other fish in my tank seem to be doing fine, still eating and swimming just fine.

I didn't think he'd make it... ;( Please do more research next time, before you buy a fish you aren't sure of.

Actually Black Ghost Knife fishes need a 120g + as an adult/mature state.

Yeah, mine wound up in the 125.
