I am finding that my bar tank can only support rays up to about 12-14" in diameter. I was originally thinking to breed and then sell the mating pair and keeping the pups. The tank has no top lip and once the rays pass 12" they like to splash water over the rim and watch me clean it up :screwy:

I am wondering about purchasing a couple of black rays and growing them out for 1-2 years and then selling to a breeder. I know we do not know the future prices for black rays and in hind sight I could have bought a few and be selling them now for a mint. Money is not a big of a deal as the Wife Acceptance Factor. I cannot have any more large tanks (I really don't need or want any more.)

Any ideas or complications that you guys see? Also at what size do the Leo's turn jet black. All the pups are grey. If they don't turn black until 9-10" I may have only a few months with a black ray.

Good question leopoldi will get black within a few months of birth or around 6" in size. We growout of pups fast it takes us around 12 months to get one 12-14" and at that size you should be able to sell them for 2000+ but that also depends on buyer and quality of ray.

leos can be black at small sizes... all depends... if you wanted to go a different route i would hold off for P14s as they stay alot smaller than leopoldi... and to be technical the wife said no more large tanks... what about a pond?

She hates the pond. I have the 300 gal Rubbermaid right now b/c I'm doing some repair on the bar. The humidity from my reef and bar is high because they both have forced air over the surface. Reef for evaporative cooling and bar to keep the humidity off the glass top. I might see if my company wants a stingray pond. What do you think the liability would be for a potentially lethal open air stingray pond in an office environment? We would have to fire people on the other side of the building so that they wouldn't jump in.

ive seen pups black @ 6" and also not fully black at 8"...
