Mine isn't as drastic as the others, and it's kind of more of a preference really, but here it goes.
It all started when I wanted a salt tank, but my 55 was occupied by my oscar of around 5" and two eclipse cats at around 3". I thus went out, bought some RO water and salt, mixed it, and poured it into my 10 gallon. About a week later I had 10lbs of live rock in it and filtering. Time passed, and I later had two damsels and a firefish all in this 10 gallon aquarium to go along with the live rock.
Well, about another week passed from this point and I had a friend that said he was willing to take my oscar and eclipse cats and put them in his aquarium. I hastily got the fish over to his house and safely into his aquarium, went home and drained my own, got more RO water and salt mix, mixed it, dumped it into the 55 gallon aquarium along with live sand and let it do its this for a couple of days. Next went in the 10lbs of live rock that I already had in the 10 gallon. After it was cycled, I plopped the fish in there.
Well of course I couldn't wait to get some more fish/live rock in there, and already was planning for things I wanted done in the future before I was even capable of doing so. I was thinking of corals and anemones even though I had no way of getting a light strong enough at that moment. Next went in another 10lbs of live rock, then a goby, then a Foxface (about 2"), then a Sailfin Tang (regret getting it honestly, while it's plenty small currently, it already needs much more room to swim. Likely gonna take it back to the LFS), then a Clownfish, then another 10lbs of live rock. Before I knew it, I was kind of just tossing things in as I went. Now I'm constantly shifting things around and never find myself happy with my aquarium as it currently is.
Anyway, the morale for me at least is that I will never put fish in an aquarium again until I have everything else in it that I want and have it all looking the way I want. It's all too much of a hassle moving everything around, and on top of that I still have another 20lbs of live rock to put in. Because of all this, I've seriously considered taking the system down for a while, finding the fish a new home, and getting things set up the way I want them to be.
Like I said, it's not anything huge, but it's changed my perspective on saltwater fish keeping and I've definitely learned a lesson from it.
