I really had a close one last night. After going to Fantastic Fins in Livonia MI to pick up my indo pacific tarpon I headed to the border to go back to my house in sw Ontario. So as we came up to the booth my parents showed the passports to the guard and he asked to see us kids in the back. So I opened the door and when he saw the big box that I was holding on my lap, he asked me what was in it. I've have taken probably about a dozen tropical fish back to Canada and never had any trouble. This guy however wanted a receipt for the fish to verify it. Problem is I hadn't got a receipt so this guard had a bit of a dilemma. All he had was my word that it was a tarpon and not a snakehead or an asian carp. After asking lots of questions about the fish he gave me a lecture about getting a receipt and stuff for taking fish across. He also made sure that I wouldn't release it into the local waterways. With that the guard let us go ahead. At 1 o'clock in the morning we were all pretty tired but after that we were all awake. So I guess the moral of this is; make sure you get a receipt or some other form of verification and always check the border to make sure it is legal to bring that species across because I know I would be steaming at myself if they took my tarpon and I would hate to hear of them killing your fish.
