Sparked from a previous thread, let's compare our pics and stories of these beautiful cats...I still have yet to meet someone in person who has ever owned one, or most of my fish for that matter .... but, noticing on this forum how different this species looks from one to another, I thought it would be interesting to note the obvious physical characteristics through pictures, but also more subtle caretaking differences such as:

tank mates, current or past, or tried
age or how long you had it
size of tank
filtration
lighting
sand, gravel, bare bottom?
type of food?
history of "missing tank mates" and most expensive ones eaten? Or the favorite tank mates gone missing by the achara overnight...
missing equipment parts
breeding or possibility

I'm not sure how many of us exist. I may bump this out of pure interest over time as well.

I had one for a couple months, now a fello mfker has him, but in my time he ate extreme pellets and his tank mates, like a pig ! I had him at 6" I believe he's already pushing 14" if I remember right ! ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1359784998.868706.jpg

My pics are a mix over the last 5 years. Here's actually a link to another post I put up about this exact kitty from other older pics, which shows different marble coloring, and how much he's changed and the "children" kitty adopted and protected for over a year (pictus cats) http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...240904-my-quot-kitty-fish-quot-achara-catfish

"kitty fish" has eaten many, many mates, I believe the most expensive was $100 or 110...the coolest was a panda fish, although my hubby might beg to differ. Kitty's currently in the 265g, but that's definitely NOT a minimum for life, as I originally thought, even as it was intended for only by itself...

Has T5 Glo lighting, but only when I want super lighting. Other than that, use regular chandleior lighting in the dining room (yes, dining room). No heaters, at room temp, which thermostat kept at 73, tank reads at 75....

I had sand in there, but kitty kept swooping it to one side. Took it out. Ph would get too low. Put it in again to raise. Put rtc in tank. kitty swooped rtc under the sand as to say the tank was his/hers....round and round kitty chased the poor rtc. Now it's a different story=nobody's tank. But, bare bottom works best. Doesn't clog the overflow corners with yuckies. Those are a pain to clean too as this tank is a reef ready.

Food? kitty starved for 1st month. Brought him home at 6 inches. Was biggest fish we ever had, came home from lfs in a box. Refused anything and everything. Musta been on live. Eventually hubby throw in HOTDOG!!! That's all kitty ate for a few months and grew FAST. Long story, now kitty readily eats no more hotdog, but any commercial food and frozen shrimp, and any other frozen food. Also have to watch out for certain live fishies.

Anytime a fish dies from the other 5 tanks, we throw them in this tank for the cats to eat. At least saves us on a meal, if the fish was a considerable size.

It's hard to measure the cat now, but looking at the tank and getting the tape measure out when he's still, seems to be 29" at 5 years with us. I have to look back on my old threads to see exactly how big he was when we brought him home.

Filtration is a 30 sump, FX5 well stocked, UV light.

Achara and the rtc have paired up very well in the tank, the rtc is a little bit smaller, but when they swim together, the rtc is right on top of the achara, in sync with the achara if that makes sense. The achara also rests on top and underneath the rtc...I'm hoping...once they get booted to the bigger tank when it's ready...

Tankmates are a RTC, algae eater and the 2 original barbs seen in the pics from the schoal of 6....3 other were eaten...1t was "destroyed" by me in the snow, well deep freezed then fed to kitty as it was picking on kitty, who had a bad wound that wouldn't let it heal. I know, mean, but I got mad. Really mad.

I've had 7 of these but don't have good pics - what little I have is taken in my 4000 gal pond before I installed good lighting, so you will see for yourselves my achara pics utterly suck.

2SB: tank mates, current or past, or tried
TBTB: too many to list, about 100 fish of 50 different kinds

2SB: age or how long you had it
TBTB: all short term, the longest maybe 2 years, the one I grew from a 3"-er to ~2'

2SB: size of tank
TBTB: from 30 gal to 4000 gal

2SB: filtration
TBTB: from HOB Aquaclear 30 to a 100 gal totter with 2000 pot scrubbies

2SB: lighting
TBTB: none/room light or workbench lights from say Home Depot for $5 with 13W CFL x 6

2SB: sand, gravel, bare bottom?
TBTB: sand and gravel

2SB: type of food?
TBTB: Any and all. Staples - spot (marine fish $0.5 a lb) and pellets ($15-$45 per 50 lbs)

2SB: history of "missing tank mates" and most expensive ones eaten? Or the favorite tank mates gone missing by the achara overnight...
TBTB: at 3"-6" wiped out all young clawed african frogs (wife's favorites) - hence grew 3" in the first month - ate offered foods and the frogs too.

2SB: missing equipment parts
TBTB: never on the acharas' part

2SB: breeding or possibility
TBTB: Not a chance. Unreported in captivity. Even sexing is unknown for this fish.

there has to be more out there who currently has this type of cat...

plus, I know the hybrid of this isn't that common, as when Snookn21 had a batch a couple years ago, we used my hybrid to help classify them. My hybrid's a TSN x achara. I've heard of RTC x achara, which I have that pair in the same tank now, which would be my dream for them to pair up, but they need a much bigger space for that to be possible, which is still in process.

But, there still has to be more ppl out there with these beautiful cats....and who love to show them off!!!!

Found my achara at Global Aquatics about 8 months ago, was about 16" already. I had no clue what it was. They called it an "Amazon Catfish" and they said it was full grown. It's gotten a little bigger since then, maybe 18" now.

Current home is a 240gal bare bottom with a 30gal? sump and a Jebo canister.

Tankmates include:
2-10" oscars
3-5" red hook silver dollars (myleus rubripinnis luna)
1-8" pleco sp??

It used to be housed with an RTC until the RTC became too aggressive. No casualties as of yet, but the acara does grab food out of the oscars' mouths and knocks the silver dollars out of the way during feeding.

I feed Hikari Massivore pellets and frozen fish, shrimp & scallops.
