Of all the freshwater fish you can buy the pacu is probly 2nd to the oscar when it come to not being prepared for their actual potential size. I also think that its 2nd to the oscar if not tied for the best fish with the most personality. They can be like a dog really. One that i owend used to roll to his size and let me rub his belly. My biggest pacu hit about 17-18 inches b4 i gave him to a friend with a bigger tank. I've owned 5 total. Everyone says they get huge but like most fish it takes almost their whole life to get to that magical 30+ inches. In an aquarium its more logical for them to reach 18-20.. In my experience its the easiest fish to keep besides the skiddishness every once and a while. They would swim around and rub my hand during cleaning, they would take lettuce from my hand, and they would come up to the glass everyday i came home. Post you pacus pics and stories or info. I want this post to educate those who have them or want to keep them. I myself have been away from them for almost a year and a half and once i get my 125 gallon set up I'm thinking of getting another and when i get the 300 from a friend he will get to grow a lil...

Heres 2 of the last i owned with my jag cichlid. You can tell which is the big guy. His name is pac and the smaller is called tiny. The jag was known as DR. DEATH

There are far worse fish then Oscars,: RTCs, TSNs, AROs, even some plecos.

I've seen Pacus cheaper then Oscars at petstores. I'd rank an Oscar at 5th spot just in front of a pleco

well i think that pacus and oscars are bought way more the tsn and rtc. Plecos can be on that list tho. This thread isnt up here or that tho. its a thread to discus pacus and to post pics of them for those who keep them

Eh, I have agree with Warborg, you can't compare Oscars to the true monsters he mentioned. Sure the Oscars are most abused but they can easily kept in 75gal. I have no doubts that Pacus took 1st place for being worst fish kept in aquariums. Most pacus will outgrow 300gal easily and you can found some members has some 30" pacus. 18-20" pacus sounds like stunted...

Sounds like your stunting and killing their lifespan.

Buying pacu is never a good idea, you shouldn't try to convince people to do it. Your only going to convince people who dont know any better, and that is why pacus are the number one abused fish... because if people think they are okay in fish tanks ( you ), then others follow. Your the main contributer of your abusing circle.

My Pacu was an easy 23" and growing! In my 225. I gave him away to a good home though. they said they had a 265 so he will soon out grow that and move on to a larger tank i hope!

Even with 300gal, it look crammed in that tank. And the pacu is only FOUR years old!!! I hate to say this but I once own a pacu few years ago, thought it was a piranha but it outgrow a 20gal by time when its about 10 inch long. I return it to the lfs. And one time my LFS got a black pacu about 25" it was kept in 55gal but when he got spooky, he busted that tank and 6 tanks which is on same shelf (he run through all tanks!!!) it was put down because the lfs have no large tank to put him in.
