I'm going up north for a week and frankly I don't trust my sump to let it stay on unsupervised. So I'm putting a sponge filter that I had in the sump in the tank and running that for the week. Will letting the sump sit for a week kill the beneficial bacteria? Or will the water get really stagnant and gross?

Thanks!

put some airstones in your sump under the media and there shouldn't be any problem. I think you'll probably get an ammonia spike in the tank though... unless the sponge was all of your bio media?
is it planted?

I've had die off of the BB after a long power outage. Can you put the bio media in your tank? Perhaps you could add a source of ammonia to your sump to keep the BB fed.

The sponge just has bio media on it from being in the sump. there are some minnows as well actually trapped in the sump lol so that would be a source of ammonia. the tank is not planted.

mmmm after reading both of those im thinking about keeping it running...Ill just have someone check in on it but that still worries me. Ive had the sump set up for 3 months now with no problems but i feel like when no ones around thats when something will happen

I have an overflow box. I feel like one of the utubes will somehow lose suction and water will stop flowing into my sump...do you think that is a realistic fear? lol or do you think ill be fine?

Ya i feel like im just paranoid about it because like i said after 4 months and no problems i shouldn't worry to much. Also if the overflow box was to fail while lets say the family was upstairs the tank would overflow in minutes so it doesn't really make a difference lol.

I got an overflow box on one tank and never really had any problems with it. Of course i left enough room so even if my sump gets pumped dry it will barely overflow the tank if at all. I would just leave it running and like you said just get someone to check on it for you. Could also add a second j tube so if one looses prime you still have the other.

If the sump gets pumped dry i figure about 20 gallons would get pumped on the floor which would not be good. However, like you said there are 2 u tubes so if one fails somehow there is still another. And i will have someone checks it once a day i figure i will be good...at least I hope so lol
