Hi all, l have had some problems for about a week now in my 150 gallon American cichlid tank with levamisol treatment for callamanus worms, recommended dosage from the seller which I followed was 0.5 grams per 10 gallons 7 days now with daily water change since day three because of huge ammonia spike 0.50. two fx6 filters on this tank have been running for months with no previous issues fish are not eating not even interested, uneaten food has always been removed I'm devastated, my fish and l may be on the brink . Any thoughts on this dosage of 99 percent levamisol would be appreciated. Thanks

When I bought it the dosing was different. I got .3g per 10g. The directions were to dose one time and wait 24hrs then perform a water change. Then repeat dose and wait another 24hrs and perform a water change in 3 weeks. Repeat as needed.

My fish are now starting to eat thank God apart from my green terror who has a very swollen belly but is moving around the tank better would be a shame to lose him , I will move him give him dose of Epson salt. There seems to be so much confusion over levamasole dosages

Massive overdose. See below .....

The correct manner to treat is treat using dosage stated below (2 ppm) for 24 hrs, wait 2 weeks, and treat again.

" One effective bath treatment dose is 2 ppm (mg/liter) levamisole for 24 hours, with a repeat treatment in two to three weeks."
The scientific community considers 2ppm of Levasimole HCl to be an adequate dosage, which works out to 1gr per 100 gallons, not 5gr per 100 gallons as constantly reported on the internet.

The 5gr dosage rate originates from Charles Harrison, who is a chemist/ fish hobbyist, that sells (or used to sell?) Levasimole HCl, not a VMD that specializes in treating tropical fish. (such as Dr. Roy Yanong)

Dr. Yanong also suggests that the treatment duration be 24 hrs, not 3 days as currently suggested by Charles Harrison. It appears that Charles got his info many years ago from a killi hobbyist (Ken Laidlaw), that as far as I can tell has no real qualifications for treating fish for disease etc beyond the hobbyist level.

Thanks for the info duly noted. Remaining fish are eating a little apart from chocolate chichlid although he seems he seems a little interested I haven't seen him eat, today I had to take out the green terror and euthanize a sad day. Still battling ammonia spike don't know wether this had been caused by changing too much water due to panic or the meds in went 3x Evo aqua bombs anyways ,snake oil perhaps we will see, ammonia level at 0.25

I had an infestation of Camallanus in one of my tanks (quarantine, thankfully...) and the current situation for aquarium medications is pretty grim here in Canada. Even pre-Covid, just about every fish med was banned as a knee-jerk reaction to the overuse of antibiotics. With nothing else to try, and nothing to lose, I purchased a puppy dewormer called ProSense, active ingredient: piperazine, which is supposed to be effective against roundworms. Tough call regarding dosage; I simply soaked some freeze-dried tubifex in the thick syrupy fluid and then fed the fish. Repeated this twice more at weekly intervals. The only fish I lost was one so far gone that she would not eat; the rest seem to have recovered completely.

I'm not a big user of medications, and don't know much about the various concoctions that are or were available. Just presenting this for discussion or dismissal; it worked for me and I'll be keeping it around for future emergencies.
