I've had my 125g setup for 2 months now and up until 3weeks ago I didn't notice that my water wasn't level, it's off by about 1/8-1/4". I didn't think to much about it seeing as my 55g at my old apt. was off about the same and it was fine for 4 years. But being a much bigger tank I decided to do some searching on the subject and now I'm totally freaked. :nilly:

I talked to the owner at the LFS today and he said that I wouldn't have to completely drain all the water to tap a shim in, your thoughts on this?

BTW the tank is on carpet. :help2:

Could cause a pressure crack(s) and the tank could leak or completely blow out. The LFS guy also confirmed this.

I'll assume we are talking glass. IMO, I honestly don't think a 1/4" any way would make a difference. And if it did, I really don't think wedging in a shim with a full tank is going to work. I think you'd be exerting much more single point pressure with a shim compared to 1/4" water level difference across an entire tank wall.

Just for clarification...the shim would be sliding under the stand.

I don't know how you would be able to shim the tank without draining the water. I would like to know how that is possible. I have a 120 tank too and I had to drain my tank to shim it after I found out it was uneven for a week. Took me 3 hrs to figure out how to get it level. I have one of those stands with eight legs so it was a pain in the @ss.:irked: Unless you have a 6 foot leveler it's pretty much a trial and error process. Shim and fill 15% water to see it it's level. If not then drain and re-shim. I have an old house in the 1940's and the floor is all whacked and uneven.

You could probably get away with less than 1/4 off but we all like to have peace of mind. Get it done right once so you won't loose sleep over it. I know I did when my tank was not level.:nilly:

Is it out of level 1/8-1/4" over 6 foot accross the front or over 18" from front to back? Is the flooring is sotting on a framed wood floor or concrete? What is the construction of your stand?

It's uneven across the 6' length, the water level on left side is higher. It is on a concrete floor covered by carpet and the stand is wood made by All-Glass.

Aright I just took some new measurements, I drained so that the side that was low is 1/2" below the trim.

Left to right- off by 1/8" right side is lower
Left side front to back- off by 1/8" back is lower
Right side front to back- level

I put a 18" level front to back and it shows both sides is level.

My tank for reference.

IMO i dont think 1/8th of an inch is very concerning. No floor is perfectly level. and you are trying to slide a shim under the stand btw the carpet. Sounds like a lot of trouble for not to me. I have a 125 and a 100 and a 90 and they are all just about level but not perfectly so.
