i have read that bowfin(amia calva) inhabit ontario waters. i was wondering if someone would be willing to capture and ship me a group of fingerlings, or three or four 8-12'' sub adults this spring/summer. i realize that it may be easier to get these fish shipped from the states but i want bowfin from their northern most range as i want to set them up in a slightly heated outdoor pond and i feel this will ensure a better rate of survival. apparently they inhabit the st lawrence and ottawa rivers, lake champlain west throughout the great lakes, including georgia bay and lakes in nipissing and simcoe, ontario
if interested please shoot me a pm or email and we can work something out.

cheers,
Jordan

If this helps you to locate some, they do live in lake Champlain. I saw two of them in lake Champlain when I was up there visiting.

not gonna keep it warm, just gonna put a stock heater to prevent freezing, temps won't exceed 15c during the winter, so yes slightly heated

Like Chompers said! I thought the exact same thing as you did. I live in Westminster, Maryland. Our winters would probably be considered on the warm side to you all. I don't remember the last time that the temperature dropped below zero Fahrenheit. Maybe never in my 40 year life, not sure!

While I do keep my outdoor pond around 5 degrees Celsius warmer than you plan to keep yours, I would imagine that your winters are SOOO much more brutally colder that ours, that it would still work in my favor requiring less electricity to heat my pond to 20 Celsius than your pond to 15 Celsius.

I figure this based on the theory that your Canadian winters are well over 5 degrees Celsius cooler on the average than mid Atlantic US (Maryland) winters.

With all of that said, in order to maintain my 20 degree Celsius temperatures this winter (which was the coldest in Distant memory here in Maryland and NEVER hit or came that close to zero Fahrenheit) required a 1200 watt water bed heater built immediately below the plastic formed pond. Two internal 300 watt heaters have also been employed in order to maintain this temperature.

So for just that tiny "little" heating required please be fully prepared to AND EASILY ABLE to pay for the electricity of the additional 1,800 watts of running a large percentage of the time for three to four months straight.

Just trying to give you a somewhat better perspective on what you desire!

winters aren't too cold here rarely below minus -5c, the pond is a large stock tub approx 230gal. i do understand the cost associated with heating it if left outdoors. still not sure if i'm gonna leave it outside for the winter or move it into the garage to save a little on the heating.

lots of bowfin here in southern Ont. I'll keep my eyes open in the spring when they are breeding in the shallows. I catch them in the weedy tributaries of Lake St. Clair.
