:irked: i was at my lfs today and saw some 4" tsn's so i asked how big they get. she said " u see that one there" pointing at a 20" tsn in another tank "about that big." now i guess its a good thing i didnt buy it because i checked the catfish sticky and it said 3.5- 5 foot! u know my job would be alot easier if i could blindly make up crap!:screwy:

If someone told you an arawana rarely lives to the 20" size before dying in a tank would you have accepted that? It's true. Normally an arawana dies before reaching 20" in a home environment, usually from jumping out. TSNs don't jump as badly but die from other causes. I've seen TSN at 36"+ in a store labeled NOT FOR SALE. It's rare that an individual would actually raise one to that size. In a public aquaria it's more likely to reach close to full size.

Maybe her response should have been, "most of our customers rarely get one to that size." How's that?

She may have had comments about you to other employees after you left too.

I agree with fishmaven. It may not be the best advice to give, but it is true that several species don't attain their full potential in aquariums.

but still, many lfs employees dont know the full potential of many fish they sell. i encounter "unknown" species in and lfs here quite often...

True, there are a large percentage that don't know what they are talking about. Personally I don't take LFS or corporate pet store fish info for much, if at all. There are some shops where the owners, or employees know an extensive amount about fish, and should be listened too. It is pretty easy to weed those out from the rest of the herd though.

I know i love when a highschooler at one of the stores tries to tell me what i need to do to take care of my fish... half of them know me already and dont even bother... but them damn newbies kill me with the 20 questions when i buy a fish "what size tank do you have? whats it goin in with??" I ususally tell them some smart ass comment... the other day the manager was giving me hell and I told her that i keep stuff that they couldnt keep alive....mainly my stingrays and her response was "stingrays belong in the ocean" now supposedly this manager interned at some large public aquarium and has a marine biology degree if so why do I with just a high school diploma know more then she does about keeping fish????

Yeah, that whole interrogation irritates me too. It makes me feel better though knowing that these employees are using their heads before selling fish to just anyone.

I don't like it either but would you rather they sold a Pacu to a guy with a 10 gallon tank at home?

i love the ones that assume i own a 10gal tank and try to run there mouths. i get the question "whats it going in with", i list what i own and he snaps back with "all in a 40gallon tank", then i jus shut them up with the "actually its a 150, along with a another 100gal tank occupied by fish you couldn't contain or own even if you tried." i freakin hate my lfs's seriously... they all know me as regulars now but ever lfs assumes rather then askin.

Awesome thread. I work at Petco:screwy: :WHOA: :( To be honest they have not even mentioned a word about fish species or anything that would educate me about selling and fish to a customer and giving them the info they need to know. But in all honesty it is up to us to do our homework. Before I go into a lfs i always have a few test questions to ask the employes just to see if they have a clue what their talking about.
