I make it a point to visit as many Local Fish Stores as possible so that I can ensure that I am getting the best quality for the best price. I will bet you I have been to most of the stores, if not all, in Nassau and Suffolk County. The first thing you need to ask yourself is "which is more important price for quality?" Of course the answer would be both, but if you had to choose one they would have to be quality. I mean what is the point of paying $20 for a fish that is worth $100 if it's going to die within a week and contaminate your whole stock? No one wants that! If you do I would suggest you going to one of the chain stores like Pet Smart or Petco. I never go to those because my fish are too important to me. That does not mean that you have to pay overpriced prices like you would at a LFS like Aquarium Adventure, which is actually a chain store. I have been there and paid double what I should and the fish died after a short while. New Hyde Park Pets has reasonable prices, but their fish are of an inferior quality and usually die way before their time.

The local fish store that I suggest and recommend to all is Parrots of the World. The fish there are hand selected to ensure the best quality. Their prices are fair and the help is always there to guide their customers whether you are a novice or an expert. It will only take you a few seconds in the store to realize that these people really care about animals and are not only there for a paycheck. I have been there many times ready to spend my hard earned money and after testing my water parameters and noticing that they are not perfect, I have been recommended not to buy any fish until my parameters became stabilized. This is a rare quality. Where can you go, wanting to spend your money and be told that you should wait? This is a place where I find that all the staff is knowledgeable and caring, their fish are of the best quality and their prices are fair. Parrots of the World is my recommendation for LFS on Long Island. What's yours and what have your experiences been like?

aquahut, btj's brian aquarium on long island are the top aquarium pet stores . bar none

YEp parrots of the world in rockville center... never make you wait for service... you can even look at their stock list and ask for them to bring in certain fish... Ive done that a few times...

Country Critters route112 Patchogue. there's a good fish store in Lynbrook off of Peninsula Blvd. I can't remember the name of it. Let's not forget who used to be the best. My old boss ED's Aquarium.

Craig,I Don't Believe Ed's Aquarium Is Still in Business, most likely because you're not working for any longer. Seriously my friend and need to check out country critters, but for the service, quality, and knowledge I don't think you can beat Parrots Of The World on Sunrise Highway in Rockville center

I agree on country critters on rt 112, good selection, decent looking tanks but service is a little rough. BTJs on sunrise hwy I swing through every now and again, they often wind up with some oddballs in there that you wont see else where, but their tanks are filthy, fish often seem sickly and are WAY over priced IMO.
I have to say A Lot of Fish on Montauk HWY in babylon is the spot. Small hard to find shop, but the tanks are pristene, the owner knows his product, and the fish are great quality, he breeds alot of his stock there, and had the best invertebrate selection ive seen on the island. Check them out, they wont steer you wrong.

I live in Long Beach, usually go to Parrots of the World, but Mutts and Butts on Merrick Road in Merrick is my 2nd option. Someone recently told me about Fish Town USA on Northern Blvd in Queens, its worth checking out but a lil too far to be practical for me.
