So im really really keen on buying a red tail golden arowana and went to my LFS and an arowana farm to check them out. Both places labelled their arowana as "red tail gold" but there is a stark difference in price. Is it that there is some sort of grade difference? Here are the pics.

Red Tail Gold from arowana farm:

And this are the ones from my LFS:

The one at the farm is selling for $288 whereas the one in the LFS is going for only $160! Can anyone tell if there is a difference in grade or quality and which one should I get? Thanks!

i personally like the first set of pics. The farmed fish look well fed and they have energy . The LFS looks nice but there's definately a different quality range there .

I was thinking of buying the farm's too cos i can see some shimmer on the 5th level but very slight. Not sure if there will be 5th level shine when older. Shall check out other farms first. But still curious whats the diff between the two that cause the price difference.

Ultimately Genetics come first then water quality, tanning and food for colour development...
Take the farm one the other one is a standard RTG...And the farm one has few sparks of shine on the 5th level and its young so in time you might get a good arowana..
But the price of the one in the farm can fetch you a highback or something better then re-think your plan

Hmm thats really good advice! Is it safe to say that a high back has a guaranteed 5th level shine? If i get the farm's, im really banging my hopes that those shimmering spots will become a full 5th level. Think it's possible? And does red tail gold or hbrtg really mean that it will have a red tail? Hahaha

Ignore the cost, it really is irrelevant in the greater scheme of things when you consider the lifespan of the fish and the financial commitment required to house and feed it over the length of its life. IMO the fish in the top pic looks nicer, but if you want the 5th level shine then spend a bit more on a quality XB. An extra $200 in purchase price works out at about 5.5 cents per day if you have the fish for ten years, you're going to be looking at it a long time so make sure you get one you like!!

Xback are the best as menyioned before! But if you are asking me about the HBRTG or RTG yes it will have a red tail. The thing about arowana's is you can never predict how they will be when they mature and the matured ones are too expensive...I mean of course a basic difference in species can be identified but the shine level is something you will get to know only by growing it!
My opinion get the farm one maybe WTT might help it to get its 5th level shine
