I bought some ghost shrimp today and was curious how the LFS water was, so I tested it.

It came out to be..
Ammonia- 2.0 ppm
Nitrite- 0 ppm
Nitrate- 160 ppm (it was darker then the red on the color card)

Im using the Aquarium Pharmaceuticals test kits.

I dont want to seem like a prick to these guys, but do you think I should give them a call and just let them know? Any opinions would be great, Thank you.

they are only ghost shrimp, :P unless they were hooked up with the other tanks too! then :/

I wouldn't go there, you should ask them about water quality and if it is important as some people say it is, suggest that you don't W/C and don't filter, Oh also tell them that you do 100% water changes with out treating the tap water. See what they say to that?

:nilly:

I dont think most lfs could care less about how the quality there waters are, as long as no fishes are dying.
I have a lfs in my area that will only take back fishes that died as long as the reading of your water is nitrate under 20 PPM, ammonia 0, nitrite 0. I bet there water is off the chart nasty from housing 3 huge oscar, 4 huge plecos, ( 2) 16" p-bass, and so many other fishes in that tank its not even funny. Now, how pathetic is that.:nilly:

hhahhhahah! At work, I wish we were so laid back :(

I have to algae scrub at least once a week, i water test/temp twice a week and make sure the water tanks are always toped up. they are all sub divided tanks so the water is not mixed. and gravel clean weekly too!

All out readings are really good, We give fish health guarantee, but if the water doesn't come near perfect readings, we just tell them that their aquariums are poisoning their fish, and it's their fault, we maintain great water so our fish are pretty healthy, we expect nothing less.

You should go in and inform them you are a biologist working with the health department and you are concerned with their hazardous conditions with in their fishtanks.

Tell them there is a new act called Act 2.0.1. that enforces a strick policy on sanitary conditions with in, and around fishtanks located in Petshops...

tell them, chemicals such as ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate have been scientifically proven to cause harm to living organisms and that its a 1,000 dollar fine, per tank.

You could have some fun with this.

Thanks for the responses. All of the tanks are together so all of their freshwater tanks would have these readings. The ghost shrimp are food for my dempsey..
