i have learned alot about fish from reading the articles on here. does anyone else know why LFS miss name fish. is it because of lack of knowlage or just trying to make a sale. i have visited several in my area and i am finding it hard to trust them. either because they do not know or they are making things up. should local fish stores even be allowed to sell "monster" fish. people considering having one of these fish as pets should become a memeber here first. there is so much to learn and the fish will not placed somewhere it can not be taken care of. any other thoughts.

I've noticed this too, but for a different reason. English is not the first language of most LFS's in my area. It's just a mistake but Chava nose cat and Clown Load are 2 of my favorites.

I think alot of it has to do with the fish farms or fish distributors who rename some fish to make them more interesting or more exotic. If you go to a LFS that is truly specializes in fish will know some info. But since LFS are not the best paying job to pay bills they hire newbies and young people. You really have to judge each person in the shop true knowledge. Usually there is one who really knows his fish! I prefer not to ask for advice especially from big retailers. But in my area all the "mom and pop" stores have disappeared and now I'm left with Wallyworld, Pestmart, and Petco! Now I have a preference for Pestmart over the other 2.

They get fish from the wholesaler who sends them labeled. The LFS picks fish from the wholesalers list which is full mistakes, for example when I looked for Parachromis Loisellei I found Jaguars are under Cichlasoma along with Dovii. Not only are they both Parachromis but Cichlasoma is now ex-Cichlasoma.
They also have Jags and Dovii under S. America and Uaru under C. America. These are only the mistakes I remember the specifics of but I remember there were more.
I am lucky that my LFS staff are all hobbiests and know that the list is way off.
Some of the common names have more than one species attributed to them also, such as rainbow cichlid. I have seen Synspilum and Herotilapia Multispinosa called rainbow cichlids.
Common names are rubbish to use when requesting fish. You really need to go in armed with the scientific names of what you want or you may end up getting more than you can handle.

i am not very good with the scientific names of fish but i have learned a great deal by being a member here. i guess for the average person they do not care about a specific fish or what they are being told. i have been taking my fish very seriously and this site is great. my wife does not think so but she is starting to turn around.
