So my wife is a huge Library person and book reader, I kinda hate to read most things. Well we had time to kill and was at the library so I thought lets see the pretty fish books. It started out with just a few books on fish types and information, then went to aquarium plants. So I was kinda excited to look at the pictures, but I really wasn't reading to much, unless I saw a fish I wanted.

Today I got two books on fish health and diseases and I can't stop.

So just wanted to say the Library can be a fun place for fish keepers. I am excited to really get into some of the facts behind certain aspects.

I did have to chuckle I checked out this older book, about the width of the larger harry potter books. I didn't have time to read it but wanted to glance at the section called sand.

This book sad its worse then gravel and only needed in planted tanks, or for aesthetics. It went on to say gravel is easier to clean and maintain, and that gravel is better for your tank. In all fairness the book was old yellow pages and really crappy black and white photos. I think I will read it to get a sense of the old school.

Any one recommend an awesome book I need to own? after this I have at least 5 books I am buying.

Cool. Good for you that you are so interested in all these books. Too many people on this site are lazy in their pursuit of fish keeping knowledge. It is great when fish keepers put some effort into it.

sweeet...my wife gave me a sony reader and i have already download several books on cichlids and plants. along with the voyage of the Beagle.

It's great that you found some good books! I know of a lot of good SW books, but no really good FW books (or rather, I haven't discovered them yet!).

Haha I was doing research for an independent study course I'm taking on education in museums (of course my thesis is based on teaching kids how to be fishkeepers!) and I found some really old, hilarious articles up in the stacks at my library (I go to William & Mary -- their collection is OLD and EXTENSIVE)! Some of the stuff I was reading from the 50's made me laugh out loud. I have a feeling that old book you found will offer some pretty funny tidbits... you should share them if you have the time!

How do you download the books. How much is each book?

Well MFK is by far the most awesome and dynamic source of information, but typically you can only get the information if you know what to ask. The problem is people like me who don't have a lot of knowledge don't know what questions to ask, or that we are even needing to ask something.

If you read in general you will learn more about the hobby, learn things you didn't know you didn't know, and be able to better ask for help. I work in IT support, and its very frustrating for both me and the customer when they don't know what the problem is or how to describe it. Where as with customers who are knowledgeable they can say the problem is X, or can at least give good details of the problem.
