A friend of mine picked up a large shallow rimless/frameless. She originally intended to do a mixed reef tank, but changed her mind since she's scared of the upkeep and upfront cost.

She'd like to keep asian aro's and discus in the tank now. Only trouble is she doesn't want to come home to a $2,500 fish on the floor because it thought it could fly.
I suggested getting plate glass with spacers and just laying it on top. She doesn't like this look and it isn't best for air exchange.

I then suggested clear eggcrate on top. She likes the idea, but ideally she'd store the cover when friends and family are over and hiding 3 sheets of eggcrate isn't easy.

Finally I thought of clear nylon mesh attached by suction cups. Same material as a fish net just clear and more open holes. Easy to remove and doesn't look too bad when left in place.

Any ideas?

Canopy...

If you or she is the handy type, they are ultra simple to make... and you could easily include a layer of egg crate above the water...

So upfront cost and maintenance is why she isn't doing a reef tank...

But she is getting some of the most expensive fish in the freshwater hobby that have the highest maintenance needs...

...I don't get it...

...Not that I need to...
