My 300 did not come with lids. I looked at the manufacturers website ( http://www.midwestcustomaquariums.com/index.html ) and they do not recommend them for greater gas exchange but they do make them.

I am worried about evaporation.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would use them. Evaporation would be crazy with that much surface area, and oscars sometimes jump (I think I remember you saying you were getting a couple)

If you're using a wet/dry there is absolutely nothing to worry about, and I think you'll be ok with other filters as well

That was my thinking but I just wanted a second opinion.
A guy could use eggcrate for jumping fish but like you said, that is a lot of surface area for evaporation.

Thanks, I'll get some ordered.

i use eggcreates too.. and put some acrylic sheet on top.. but not the whole opening. basically, the whole opening it covered by eggcreate and i got some thin acrylic at homedepot and covered some portion on top of the eggcreate. only 15% of the cover is exposed to air but covered by the eggcreate for safety.. hope you got what i mean.

I sure do, thanks. I was also thinking that if I ordered the custom fit lids I could always drill holes in them if I was worried about gas exchange.

I like the eggcrate/cheap acrylic idea, I'm going to use that on a couple of my tanks!

If you have a wet/dry with a sump, put a lid on that tank!

Lids it is !!!

Thanks all !!!
