hi guys i have a new cichla to share. this one is kind of a find. i passed by a local lfs primarily selling feeder goldfish and feeders in a pet shop district in manila called Cartimar.. And if you've been to this area, some stalls are really ghetto looking and i would have to say very dirty and have very poor living conditions for fish. the old man who owns the pet stall was curious why i bought so much feeders so i told him im a cichla keeper. seeing a potential sell, he told me that he has a cichla runt thats kind of deformed. He has been keeping the fish for a year now and can sell it to me. he used to sell some monoc farmies a year ago and this guy was the last of the lot. i guess no one really wanted a deformed fish. he pointed me to a small cloudy 15 gallon aquarium underneath his feeder tanks, there was no lighting and just an air bubble, no filtration of any kind. i was stunned to see this fish as this is the first time i've seen the real thing. he asked for an equivalent of $12, i acted like it was too much for a deformed fish and offered $7.50, to my surprise he accepted it. so i now have a 7 inch naturally deformed shortbody peacock bass. i know i know shortbodies are kind of a grey area for cichla enthusiasts.. i for one would never order those shortbodies that are being bred and sold at a premium price. but hey, im only human:) and at least now he is in clean water and in a big tank being taken care of like normal pbass:)

why do people in the far east love turning fish to sh*t so much?

congratulations on the pick up, im glad you're going to take care of it. however, the breeder of that fish should be shot!!

Thats awesome, you gave him a second chance on life. How did the your cichla react to the introduction I'm curious to know? Any aggression?

thanks guys! definitely worth more than $7.50 with all the hardships this guy has been through. Shortbody's here are rare and are selling for $200 when available, being ordered from abroad of course.. There are no breeders here in the country that breeds specifically shortbody pbass.

yeah ken he does look healthy, really thick but im sure its because he is really packed internally, there are some small holes in the head, you cant see them much in the pics but i guess he had some hith issues when he was in that dirty tank. every feeding time he is ok with one feeder, im guessing stomach and intestine are too compressed to be eating multiple feeders.

omojena - i actually believe that this particular fish was not raised to be like this. with 500 plus fry in each hatchling in each breeding, there will surely be defects. fry with no tail, narrow tail,no forehead,no lips, 2 bars, blind, one eyed, no left pectoral fin (i had one temensis like that before), and i guess shortbody is one of the defects of this particular batch. because if the breeder was indeed culturing these, those shortbodies will definitely not show up in the cheap fish part of the pet fish district. im no fish breeder but do i make sense?

Lambrakopolous - this guy is currently housed in a hundred gallon with 2 f1 bahia kels and 3 orinos. all are about 6.5 inches. no aggression at all from any of the fish. but for the most part he doesn't swim with the group. maybe got used to being alone.
