Anyone use these filters? been looking into filtering the pool.. and been pricing out a few ways to go.

Option 1) DIY sump ( will be our second sump build, built one for the 120 every is in now)

Option 2) Fx5's

Option 3) Talking to one of our local lfs who run a big SW pool system ect mentioned looking at the lifeguard systems. Anyone use these to filter their ray tanks? pro's cons? so far I'm liking that for the size they are very economical, and if i'm not happy with the initial set-up seem pretty easy to customize/add-on. I was looking at the larger tubes and running mech/bio.. I'm not a fan of carbon so I'm thinking those 2 tubes.. then the pump. with the goal of down the line adding UV.

btw the pool holds around 1k gallons. the pool will hold a variety of fish but I would like to get into rays more seriousely so want to focus the filtration ect. around them.

I have used them a lot without any issues. The only down side is they are kind of awkward when using the cartridges as mechanical. Do to the length, they don't have much strength in the middle and will wear out a little faster than a shorter, more sturdy insert.

For a 1,000 gallon pool, I'd look into something larger for a single canister to worry about changing instead of several smaller ones like the LifeGuards offer. Jacuzzi makes great large scale filters.

you will need about 6 x fx5 to run a 1000g prob more depending on the bio load

the amount of cleaning fx5 need you will be cleaning one once every few weeks

This was my main concern when looking at them.. they look alot like my old micron cartridge on the old magnum hott systems... and that thing got clogged after a few hours "polishing" my 55. I was also playing with the idea of doing a quad set-up w/ 2 mechs and 2 bios of the shorter stacks vs the 2 long stacks.

a Quick Google search for the Jacuzzi filters gave me a whole bunch of pages on converting pool/jacuzzi filters into fish filters. I will do some more indepth searching. did come back with a few big bead filters, now that I think about it i'm thinking these are what you're talking about? as I reckon they do both mechanical and biological? I've seen a few threads talking about useing them for large heavily stocked tanks.

I kinda figured the FX's would be cost prohibitive and don't even want to think how much our electric bill would run with that many.

I don't mind cleaning filters.. as long as they are doing their job.. ime if my filters are dirty they are working.. if they aren't.. then i'm compensating with vaccing ect.

Think about all 6 x drain pipes on a fx5

It's not the cost of running fx5s you need to worry about
I turn over 15,000 gal per hour in my tank and the pumps use up 1kw for all 3 pumps

You need to be turning over 10 x the tank volume per hour to be safe

Jacuzzi makes both sand/bead filters and cartridge/canister style (like a Magnum HOT on performance enhancers).
A sand/bead filter will give mech and bio. The cartridge style will be more mech since you change them out.

AquaticEco.com has both styles. Depending on your budget and space, the cartridge/canister (Jacuzzi ShurLok filter) style might work better.

This is the best pic I could come up with quickly. The black canisters are them. This runs a 5,000 gallon shark tank.
