Bought two new heaters today cause my lfs had a sale 25% off everything. Went to buy one but couldn't recall exactly how long I have had another one so figured better to be safe than sorry! The rest are fairly new.... The one has been acting up a little bit the last couple days. Check my temps on a regular basis and my one tank although heater set at 80, was at 84 this morning. They usually don't fluctuate. Any one have any idea the average lifespan for a heater?!

This topic was just on another thread, lol. For me I have had one cheap heater leak and fry after just a couple months, other than that unless Something broke it I have had no failures, even with filters that were quite old. One thing I do though is once the heater is dailed in where I want it I use a dot of silicone sealant to hold it in place so that if it gets bumped the setting dose not change.

Heaters are a funny thing, the only honest answer I can give is between 5 seconds and 100 years. My piont is never trust a heater and check your tanks at least once a day.

I do check my temps daily, thank goodness, otherwise that tank could have been up to 100 degrees by tomorrow morning!!!! Do go away for the weekends fairly often though cause my family lives 3 hrs. Wonder if a heater went on the fritz right after I left for work if being gone 8 hrs is enough time to boil my fish?! Can never leave home again!!!!!! Wow, that would suck.... :(

i constantly break thermometers, so for all i know, my 50 gal. tank is boiling.

I had TWO Visotherms fail in less than a year, and one EboJager that failed after only about six months.

But my kid has a ten gallon set-up from Wal-Mart that has had the same heater for over 5 years.

Go figure.

Wow, that's not good to hear! I have thermometers on the fronts all all my tanks so as I walk by I can check them out. Real thermometers too..... Don't trust those sticky ones AT ALL..... :grinno:

majority of heaters have a 2-3 degree leeway, y i have no clue, but every heater ive bought the person selling it to me has told me the same thing! wierd eh?
