What's the average lifespan of the polypterus family?

15+ years is not uncommon and I believe 23 years is the current record-Anne

From what I've read here they're very long lived. 34 yrs was the max I'd heard, though I'd suspect that was a public aquarium. Expect at least 10-15 yrs (+??) in the home aquarium under good conditions.

Have you looked at this site? I seem to recall they mention lifespan.

The site that Anne posted probably has the most complete infos on bichirs there is on the net. Everyone who owns a bichir or thinking of owning should read it. I highly recommend it .

I have a P. palmas polli that I've had since December,1981. She is about 13" and lives in a 180 with cichlids and catfish.

I would really like to see a pic of this old guy/gal. Thats awesome to have kept any fish in aquaria this long. Hope mine are with me this long
