alright-

i just had my house tented and while that was going on my fish were out on my patio. i was amazed at how nice the fish looked in the natural light versus the lighting i have on the tank now. i've got pretty nice lighting on them now, but this was just amazing. my JD's and FH's looked amazing.

is there any particular lighting available that re-creates natural lighting?

metal halide does the best job of it and the agro sun blue metal halides do the absolute best at it also

metal halides? aren't those mostly used on reef tanks? damn, those are bit expensive. well, nothing nice in life is cheap so it makes sense for them to cost more than average.

perfectly fine on fresh just need the right spectrums

Yes, metal halides are best, but with just fish it's not the best deal.

In all, that's a really difficult problem. At the very least, the natural spectrum for your fish/coral/plants depends on the depth of their habitat and their latitude. The ultraviolet light from the sun definitely brings out the color in your fish, but the bugs and things help as well (rain? fresh air?). Try more live food, bugs, worms, larvae, etc.

You need to be careful with natural light or you will end up with an algae mess. In my experience, 6700k compact fluorescents work great with freshwater plants. If you just have fish, you get to choose what color you like best. Personally, I think I would like the color of incandescent lights with my fish, but those run hot and are inefficient (and I keep plants). In that case, just pick. Plenty of different color temps are available at walmart.

Unfortunately, man has not been able to harness the sun's power in a bulb. Thank god for that. LOL
