When my 125G was set up for piranha, for a dimmable low light (soft white) environment,
I mounted these above the tank. The kit I used only contained 3 lights.
Now that I have GTs and JDs, I wanted something to bring out their color so I've been experimenting.
I started with a
Beamswork HI LUMEN LED Light Fixture and it was waaay to bright for my taste. And it didn't do as much for color as I hoped for.
So I went back to the DIY route
and picked up this kit. The cool thing about this set up is it uses RGB LEDs, so it's using
three different color bulbs to make white, but the three individual color bulbs bring out all of the different colors in the fish (Red+Blue+Green=White). The other cool thing is that it can be set to different colors, so I can set it to green when the Sparty's are playing

The downside is this kit is not bright enough on its own. It is expandable, meaning you can add more light bars, but expanding it is just not cost effective.
So after searching locally in vein,
I ordered these the other day. It's the same idea, but these are 5050 LEDs (
know the difference between 5050 LEDs and 3528 LEDs), and there's 300 of them. Since I'm pretty sure they're dimmable, I should be able to find my perfect color and brightness. And since I paid less than $35 shipped for the 5M strip of lights, power adaptor, and IR remote, I really can't go wrong (I just had make sure I ordered the USA power adaptor lol). The other benefit is power consumption. I may strike out again, but we'll see when they get here.
