I'm just looking for any input and opinions on this... I notice that when I turn my tank lights out that the fish will then orientate themselves almost sideways. I'm guessing this is because more light is coming through the sides of the tank once the lights are out.

How bad of a source of stress is this? Is it worth putting a "nightlight" in just to keep them oriented properly?

I noticed the same thing on my carp and goldfish.
They turned sideways whenever lights were off.
Nowadays I got blue LED X-mas lights on at night and my fish stay upright!
So it's perfectly natural behaviour at night, it just looks strange.

did you change any of the water or temp change? My tiger O turned complete sideways and floated to the top. This happened when i turned the bright light of the tank on. I realized that the huge temp change i put him through must have done something to him. :(. After a few hours, the temp equaled out and i gradually lit up the tank and the O was fine. Try gradually lighthing up the tank instead of just turning on the whole setup at once.
