I bought a new light fixture today, from Home Depot. Its a 4 foot fixture for 2-40 watt T-12 bulbs. I have one T-12 bulb, but the other is T-8. The T-8 bulb doesn't work. Why? It has the exact some connectors on the end, and it worked fine in my old light, which broke. They didn't even have T-8 fixtures, except for 32 watts, but the bulb (power-glo) is 40, so that won't work. Anyway, is the fixture broken, or will it just not work with my bulb? If so, what can I buy that will?

about the only thing that might help is to take the bulb to someone that has a 4' strip and try the bulb out and see if its not the bulb first or just go to the LFS and ask them what there return policy is on bulbs and then tell them you don't know if your old bulb is good or your fixture is bad. See if they will let you take home a new bulb on the condition that you might bring it back.

You bring up a good point lets rephrase this...

CALL the pet store and tell them your situation and make sure you can bring your stuff in a trade it to find out if it is the fixture or the light bulb

where does the pet store come in? he said he got it at home depot? I would suggest trying the T-12 in both slots if it works then I would say that the unit isnt compatible with T-8s...

sounds like a bad bulb t-8s will work as they have the same pin configuration as the t-12s...did you try the t-8 in both outlets not just one?

Yes. I currently have two T-12 bulbs in it. I Will test the T-8 bulb in a different fixture though.

I just tested the T-8 bulb in another light fixture (which has only T-12 bulbs in it) and it doesn't work at all. Should a T-8 bulb work in a T-12 fixture, or not?

Open up the fixture and look at the ballast. It will state on the ballast what lamps will work with it. There are so ballasts that will run either T-8 or T-12 lamps. wheither it works or not has nothing to do with pin configuration, it has to do with the ballast producing the right amount of voltage to operate the lamp.
