lighting again

In general ,do you need to get a lighting fixure that is the same length of your tank or can you get one that is say,a 48 inch long fixure for a 72 inch fixture?same wattage on both units....its cheaper to get a 48,thats why I ask
 
4ft. on a 6ft. tank is fine, there may only be a problem if planting are close to the ends, but I doubt that too.

I'm actually building a cover that is 6 ft long and what I;m doing with the lights is using 48" fixtures mounted with every other one at the opposite end. by doing this I have eliminated having any dark spots in the tank, total of 8 bulbs with 2 black lights :D
