OK, ill admit, i dont know squat about the different lighting options. especially with the flourescents, what are the differences between T5 and T12? which is generally a better choice for reef aquariums? anyone have a DIY version or ideas of how it could be done? i know its quite a spectrum of answers im looking for but a link or a couple short answers from different ppl would be great

There are many different choices.

Incandescent
Fluorescent T6, T8, T12
Compact fluorescent
LED
Halogen
HO T5
NO T5
Metal Halide

I'll focus on the MH, HO T5/NO T5, and the T12 bulbs.

NO T5 bulbs put out a tiny amount more light per watt than a T12, but don't have the spread of a T12. HO T5 bulbs put out twice the lumens of a standard power compact 65W bulb. HO is the newest in lighting for aquatics, except for the new halogens that are making a splash. Metal Halide (MH) are one of the most powerful types of lighting, but they cost the most for the commonly used lights. T12 bulbs are the standard bulbs that are used in retail shops, workshops, and kitchens. These have a lux rating very similar to that of a power compact bulb, but the wattage used is far lower.
