Lighting for a 10-12G? (I know nothing!)

I am putting up a 10-12g tank which will be tied to a bigger tank (10" wide x 20" long x 14" deep). It's main use is to reduce nitrates.
It is going to have TONNES of plants. Stem plants are great at using nitrates, but I hear they need lots of light too.

What lighting would be best for this tank? Watts/kelvins, etc.
Any brand suggestions? (links would be handy) I don't want it to be too expensive...

are you going for looks or do you want nitrate removal? you can go down to walmart get some of the cfl bulbs and the stuff to plug them into.... i would try something like water lettuce hornwort or some other floaters.... they will suck up the most nitrates.
