lighting for a nano?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
U need to have atleast 40 watts so if you can do that with a flourecent go for it

You can use anything in a fowlr. A fowlr doesn't require any special light, you're simply using the rock for filtration.
If you're wanting to grow things on the rock lights from home depot won't be the correct spectrum no matter the wattage.

what is the cheapest light i can buy to grow things on the liverock? Do they grow on their own? sorry if it sounds stupid...just a newbie.

O fowlr doesnt have corals o sorry ya then any light does

You can use fluros but you will havta go buy yaself some proper spectrum globes from a LFS. IF your lucky home depot or whatever (im Aussie so no idea) might have "super white" globes or something which are usually around the 10 000K range and ok for marine tanks but check on the packet. To look good you really need an acintic tube too though which you will have to buy from LFS or pet shop. Just got for atleast 40w all up and you will be able to get some of the easier corals.

If you get good liverock a lot of organisms will come out on the rock, like featherdusters, sometimes polyps and various other creatures. You can also get livestock yourself pretty cheap or even free if you check with your local reef clubs. A lot of people have stuff overgrowing their tank and will just give it away to get rid of it.

I'm assuming you have a standard sized 10g.

These lights are 20" long and sufficient to grow some polyps and other stuff.

You could grow some higher light stuff with this. I had one on my 20Long. At the least your corals would grow faster.

This would be sufficient to at least keep some of the stuff on your rock alive.
