So I just set up my 165 and I am looking to have good lighting, so I can grow some of the medium, medium to bright light plants.

I have considered t8 lights. I looked at 3ft double bulb strips that are around 100 dollars each and two would provide 120 watts in the back. Then I would probably throw another couple smaller lights on the front to get higher wattage.

I heard about t5 being efficient and looking at t5, the same thing would be 130 dollars each and provide 160 watts which may be enough, but I would still have to use more lights for the front because the tank is 24" wide.

And then there is LED lighting, which I am interested in, but don't have much knowledge in.

$100 for a 3ft 2x bulb T8 fixture? I can get a 4ft one at Lowes for $13.

Check out www.fishneedit.com for T5HO. Some of the best prices you can find.

By the way, watts don't really mean anything when it comes to planted tanks. It's all about PAR. Check out the Lighting sticky in the planted tank section.
