could anyone tell me the best possible lighting for nocturnal fish, i want it so that ican view the fish but dont cause discomfort to them, i want them to come out of their hiding places at the moment i have two lights fairly bright one monnlight blue and one white light.Any ideas of combinations or wattages would be appreciated.

for night lighting any single spectrum of light in the low intensity range works well..all blue ,red,green this dont bother the fish as much.
i wouldnt use the white light at night and for wattage thet really depends on what you use for moon lights i've used 55w neon and have seen a member use xmas lights cool idea wattage unknown.

As little light as possible, depending on the fish, the colors will be more comfortable to different species. What is your 'white light'?
Most aquatic species can't perceive the visible light spectrum of reds. You can use a low wattage red incandescent bulb to observe your fish without upsetting any night cycle routine. The best red bulbs to use are photographic darkroom red lights since these are designed to ensure no bleed-over of visible white light.
maybe my red light isnt as red as i thought (like oddball said also have some white light in it too) but it made no difference to my fish whether it was blue or white or red. The fish could still obviously see it. Most important is just have a low wattage, but your still not going to see them too visibly because it will make the colours very different.
