This is kind of a curiosity thread...usually I buy cheap aquarium lights. After my last few gars I was thinking of trying something different. Let me know what lighting u use for your gars weather its regular house fluorescent bulbs or a freshwater aquarium bulb...also if ya can post pics ! Thanks
Cheap aquarium lights are one thing. I'll get a pic up for laughs tomorrow, I hope, but for my 90 gal: Two household 48" 40w florescents mounted ~12" above the custom poly cover, a spare 10gal hood light placed on the cover toward one side, and a spotlight with 13w florescent mounted above a mangrove on the other side.
I try to get enough light in there for the plants, but it's still a touch dim.
glass tops... overhead basement light, and indirect window light.... i actually have a 36" t8 light strip that sits ontop incase i need to get a better look at anyone... but my powerstrip is full.. lol. so its not plugged in.
with gars in captivity lighting is more or a personal preference of the owners...the gars really don't care much. sure some light and dark cycle is good, but chances are there is some fluctuation of lighter period and darker period wherever you house your aquarium. you don't need metal halides for a gar tank, and regular household lighting will do.
one important thing with lighting is to give the gars a chance to adjust if you are taking them from complete darkness to well-lit conditions (say prior to feeding, etc). don't spook them during this transition as this is when they are likely to be skittish and potentially cause back-breaking injuries--

Ye nt bad setup I kinda figured the same just was thinking of going different with some better lights...right now my setup is lit up like the super bowl..i might try to replace 2 of the normal house fluorescent's with 2 of those really light blue bulbs give it a light glow instead of straight white yellowish look..
