ok i have a light fixture i got stock from the kit i bought at walmart. the 29g complete setup they sell. well i want to get a new bulb for it but dont know how high i can go. the store by me sell bulb by the k rating so how how can i go. 6500k? 4100? anyone know. oh and the bulb i have is a 17watt that came with it

That K rating is the kelvin temperature rating. The differnt kelvins are different colors.

6500k is said to mimick natural sunlight in the summer. And is best for plants.

8000-12000k all have a blueish tint to them. The higher ones have more blue.

And I am not 100% for sure but i think that higher than 12000k starts ti become pinkish.

And below 6500k starts to become more yellow.

As long as you use the same wattage of bulb, you can choose any color you want. The higher the Kelvin temperature, the bluer the light will be. 6000K is white looking light (usually for plants), 4000K is a little redder and 10,000-14,000 is a little bluer (can be used for saltwater). 20,000K (Actinic) is very blue and is used for deep water corals.

I would suggest a Kelvin of around 8-12000k for fish that have some color to them.

IMO it makes the colors come out more.
