ive been exploring the light bulb department at wal mart and wanted some input on my lighting options. are LEDs good for plant growth at all? or would I be better off going with flourescent glow bulbs. i like the look of the LEDs better and the fixture im looking at has a remote on off switch which would be nice to turn the tank off from bed at night...i would rather get the LED unless it hinders plant growth...thoughts or comments?

LED will grow plants. How deep is your tank? I would not trust the Walmart stuff at this point....The purposebuilt LED fixtures are great but somewhat pricey. There are some good threads on both DYI LED projects and better sources for fixtures on this site! If the fixtures seem expensive think of the massive savings in replacing bulbs, electricity and reducing heat.

the brand im lookin at now is GE i believe. i would test the leds out on my ten gallon to see if i would prefer them first is one reason im looking at cheap stuff at walmart...its good to hear that they will grow plants i will give them a try. the tank im really asking for is my future 40 gal breeder. in which case i would probably run and check my options for actual aquarium hoods not just for the lighting quality but also for the evaporation factor. thank you for your input.
