So im thinking of building a hood for my 29 gallon Im just wondering what would be better/cheaper, moneys very tight these days. Would 4 of these http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/Green/EnergyConservation/CompactFluorescent/PRD~0525350P/GE%2B26W%2BDaylight%2BCompact%2BFluorescent%2BBulbs%252C%2B2-Pk.jsp be fairly high (26w each at 6500k) made with waterproof sockets, or would a couple of these http://www.homedepot.com/Lighting-F...splay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 with new bulbs of course be a better way to go. All I want is optimum growing. I have 2 of these over my 10 gallon and wow it grows but that is a much shallower tank.

Any thoughts?

CFL daylight bulbs are the best cheap plant lighting. IMO

I think 4 bulbs would be great. You have the choice of using 10/15/26 watt versions to taylor the light output to your specific plant needs.

The last one I built I bought some 6"x6" plate glass mirrors and placed them under the bulbs and used them as a reflecter. It worked out good. I got the mirrors at a dollar store here locally.
