Lighting periods?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Depends on the needs of the plants etc...

I think on average 4-8 hours is pretty standard for the hobby, although you almost have to test for yourself what works best...

Too long a photoperiod and you may get an algae outbreak, too little and your plants may suffer...

So maybe start with say 7 or 8 hours a day and then cut back on the time you leave your lights on if you start seeing a lot of plant growth, but also a lot of algae growth as well...

A lot of the local gurus to me say that a good period is 7-8 hours with a one hour break in the middle. Supposedly, the photo period of algae is around 3-4 hours, so by putting the break in the middle, you disrupt the algae growth.

^ thats interesting to hear... I may need to give that a try...

So leave the light off for an hour between the 7-8 hour session and you can help cut back on algae?

Yep, that's what the planted guys are telling me. Of course, there are some other issues that go along with algae, but this is one way to help combat it.

Since im always up for experimenting im going to give it a shot and see what happens :)

why do you have 6 t5's on a 75?
Assuming they are t5ho.....that's a TON of light......
Even just like, two t5's on a 75 is considered high lighting (assuming good reflectors)

anyways, yah, try out what those guys said. I personally have never done the blackout in the middle of the day but might have to try it one of these days.

I've heard mixed reviews on the "Ciesta" period, but I should try it since I'm not home mid day usually... Anyways, I've heard as much as 12-16 hours with t8s, but 6-8 is about average. I doubt they are high output, probably just shop fixtures. 6 t5ho bulbs on a 75 would be insane

It seems to work on my 5G tank that I have had running for a few months now. I'm going to try it out on a tank that I know has algae problems. One of my 40s. Just need to find some spare on/off switches for the time.
