Hi, recently acquired a 29 or 36 gallon octagon that has a perfecto 18 1/2 inch hood light. I'm guessing it's old because the fixture is 2 "screw in type" bulbs. Not a regular flourescent tube. Do they still sell the type of screw in bulb I would need for a fish and plant aquarium or should I just pitch it and find a new 18" that takes a flourescent? Let me know if you need any more info or a pic. Thanks a ton

I have a LOT of incandescent fixtures running. They have provided decent lighting for my tanks, but only work for low light plants. Oddly, I've also had better luck keeping green water and water lettuce under these than under tube fixtures.
I buy whatever "full sun" spectrum 100watt bulbs I find (the new fluorescent bulbs that are replacing the tungsten filament bulbs) and they cast light well. Not for a well planted tank, but great for an Oscar and some catfish. :) Hope that helps.
I'll get some pics of what I mean.

I searched the "full sun" spectrum 100 watts and didn't even know those were available. Pics would be great if you have time. I coulda been a bit more specific and the plants I had in mind were 2 anacharis or water sprite, 2-3 java fern, java moss attached to some charcoal bamboo, and a variegated wisteria. everythin but the moss about 5" tall.

Heh. Got in up to my neck in playing with the raphael catfish project. Totally spaced this. Uploading pics now.

Sounds like pretty easy planting. You might be alright with a few lamps.

The bulb.

Yes, it's a decorative metal bowl I punched a hole in. Took apart an old lamp and made it work.

It's ugly, but the fish don't care.
