I have decided to keep my remaining 2 angels but have them in a 20 long tank. I am going to move them to a 20 tall so they have a bit more height but want to also make the tank a planted tank. Looking for a relatively low cost light for a planted tank has turned my brain to mush. Too many numbers and watts and its all become quite confusing to me. Does anyone have any suggestions for good lighting that would cost less than 50 bucks but provide enough light for the plants? For a tank as small as a 20 tall would using florescent light provide sufficient light for it and if its not, would placing the tank near a window help but not create a huge algae bloom? I'm on a tight budget to get this tank up and running. Only need the light, the plants and the substrate, but the light is the most crucial part for a planted tank so i want to make sure I get sufficient lighting. I don't want to buy a used one on craigslist. would prefer to get a new one.

I would use compact fluorescents because they are easier to DIY and do a DIY hood. It's really really simple and inexpensive. Look for DIY lights here on MFK and you should find some inexpensive ones.

I had angels in a planted 20g tall with the coralife twin t5 fixture which was around $35 with lamps. Worked well with low light plants.
