Ok guys all i ask is that you take it easy on me being a noob and all, i've posted recently on setting up my first sw tank a 56 column i know that one of the first things i will have to remedy is lighting i was wondering if it is cheaper to build your own, possibly with MH or is that to difficult, also considering other options or do you have a better idea? I do know what we want to have about 3w per gallon at least thats what we have been told. any more info would be great and if you have ideas for a hood those are welcome too.

I haven't read your previous post. What are you planning on keeping in this tank? You can use regular fluorescent lighting if it's going to be a fish only tank.

Honestly, DIY would be very hard metal halide wise, you would be better off buying a set up.

It is going to need to be a strong light because the tank is deep.

how deep is the tank

i believe it is a little deeper than a 55g regular, if not the same.

i would do t5ho over halide if possible t5 will do 24 inch of water any deeper and halide would be ideal what kind of corals do you want to grow??? t5s will grow sps lps with no problem and wont heat the water like halides? lighting depends on what type of corals if any you want to keep
