Hi, I have an older tank that I bought used and it has the traditional hood with the florescent tube light in it. Recently the bulb started to dim and I went looking for replacement bulbs for it. Well, nowhere in my town carries the 4ft. bulb in the size that I have. I was wondering if it is possible to use a regular florescent tube light from a hardware store instead of one intended for fish, or will that kind of light somehow hurt my fish. Also, I don't have any live plants.

No it wont hurt your fish. Just look for something close to 6500k for natural color. Lower k number will give a yellower look while higher number will give a more crisp white. Just make sure it is the right bulb size and you will be fine
