how dangerous is it to wrap up portions of the light to cause shadows? like if i wanted a centered beam of light how dangerous is it to cover the other two sides with say aluminum foil?

Don't think it would be a good idea. Cutting off air flow could cause overheating and meltdown. Maybe try getting shorter light fixtures or suspended spot lights. Or possibly covering portions of the glass tops.
